Pi Day Celebration

University at Buffalo and The Gifted Math Program will be hosting a Pi Day celebration, March 24, 2018! This is a free mathematics festival aimed at families of middle and high school children.

Presentations

Presentations will run approximately 45 minutes.


1:15 PM The GRoW Home Martha Bohm is an Assistant Professor in Architecture teaching design, ecological practices, sustainability, resilience, and environmental systems. She was the faculty lead on UB’s GRoW Home, the 2nd-prize winner in the 2015 US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. She was a Ginsberg Research Fellow at USGBC and authored the USGBC Research Committee's National Green Building Research Agenda. She earned her Master’s in Architecture at the University of Oregon, and before graduate school she worked as a Natural Resource policy analyst at the National Governors' Association Center for Best Practices. She got her BA in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard.
2:15 PM Origami in Nature This film presentation teaches how scientists are using the ancient art of paper folding to mimic nature in new and useful ways!

Hands-On Activities



1 - 3 PM Students can explore the relationship between math and nature through a variety of fun activities including origami and the Miura fold, cicadas and prime numbers, animals and numeracy, and more!
