    Interim Director, Gifted Math Program

    Thomas Schroeder is GMP’s Interim Director and an associate professor in the Department of Learning & Instruction at UB, where he teaches courses in mathematics education and in analysis of quantitative educational research.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Princeton University and his doctorate in mathematics education from Indiana University-Bloomington, and has been on the faculty at the University of Calgary, the University of British Columbia, and Simon Fraser University prior to coming to UB in 1993.  His research focuses on describing and assessing how and how well students and teachers understand various ideas in mathematics, and he often conducts this research using interviews based on challenging non-routine problems.  The history of mathematics and its implications for teaching and learning mathematics is one of his major interests.
